I've posted my platform for the position of South Central Director for SFWA in the election debate newsgroup. If you are in SFWA and live in the South Central region, I'd appreciate your consideration.

A later edit: Charlie suggested I post the platform here too. So I will:

My name is Paul Melko, and I am running for the position of Director of the South-Central Region. First, let me present my credentials as a writer: my first novel will be published by Tor in 2008. I've had stories published in Asimov's, Realms of Fantasy, Strange Horizons, Spider Magazine, and various anthologies. I have a novella on this year's Nebula ballot. My first professional publication occurred in 2002; I am a relatively new member.

Second, let me present my credentials as a volunteer to SFWA: I sit at the short-fiction desk of the Grievance Committee. (I feel GriefCom is one of the most important benefits SFWA offers to its members.) In 2006, when I first took the position, I satisfied all 5 grievances that appeared in my inbox in favor of the author. Late in 2006, I was asked to head a special GriefCom committee to handle problems with a large publisher. With a staff of 10 volunteers I have been working with potential grievants and piles of royalty statements to get to the bottom of the problem. I will continue to head this committee if elected, though I may pass the short-fiction position to a worthy successor.

I also enthusiastically support the Nebula Award and all authors who have been recommended by posting monthly a list of works that are about to pass out of eligibility. I hope that this reminder has placed worthy works onto the preliminary ballot that might otherwise have disappeared from contention.

My goals as South-Central Region Director are:

1) To increase the membership of the region by contacting and cajoling members who have left the organization and recruiting newer writers who have just become eligible for membership and might not appreciate the benefits.

2) To increase the number of volunteers from the region.

3) To increase the types of services SFWA offers to its members.

4) To support the Nebula Awards, enhancing its prestige, increasing member participation, and finding ways to make the Dramatic Nebula more important to the industry and the membership.

5) To fulfill all the duties of a director as set forth in the officers' guidelines and by-laws.

In general, I hope that I will add to the board a logical view on all issues as well as the view of someone at the start of his writing career. Thank you for considering a vote for me for South-Central Regional Director.

Indeed. Smack in the middle of the region, and Iowans get to vote twice in any election.

I'd vote for you if you were in my region.

You could move, you know.

I told Shunn to move to my region so he can vote for me. Only he does it after the election.

I couldn't help noticing that you failed to mention your position on roadkill and I'm wondering why.

Nevertheless, you've got my vote, assuming Puerto Rico -- or North Carolina, where I may be residing in the near future -- lies within your bailiwick.

And thanks for volunteering!
