Reviews and References
There's a nice review of Singularity's Ring in this month's Locus, opposite a page ad that shows it as one of four books from Tor this month. Also shown in the ad is fellow BHer Sandra McDonald's The Outback Star, sequel to her Bloom'n Onion Nebula. Gary K Wolfe sums up with "While some of these devices reveal the somewhat overplanned and schematic flaws of a first novel, Melko's skill both in story and setting is undeniable -- the Amazon sequences are particularly convincing, even if the Goldilocks business with the bears isn't (bears discover telepathy?). There's more than enough invention and imaginative courage here to suggest that Melko may be at the beginning of an auspicious career."

Not bad. Also, I got a nice spike of sales from a mention on Instapundit. That little link bumped me to #17 on Amazon's SF best sellers. Another review of interest is here at Fantasy Book Critic.

Ii think you mean my Shrimp-on-the-Barby Hugo!

Is the ad for book 1, really? Book 2 is coming out soon!!! Alas, I won't get my Locus for weeks -- it always comes late. Florida is very far away from civilization.

For The Outback Star trade paperback edition. We share space with A. Lee. Martinez and Robert Sawyer.

Did Wolfe skim over the chapter where the bears are explained? While the storytelling devices you used were obvious, I didn't have any problems with them. It's not like you were trying to sneak something past the reader.

My only crit is I kept forgetting Quant was a woman.

Well done, Paul.

Thanks, Scott! Quant was a male in the first version of the novel. :)

It's in my reading stack now - and I'll probably come off like a snob saying this (and I know you probably didn't have a choice on packaging/publisher) but if I hadn't known about the book through your blog or known your name, if I'd just found it browsing at Borders I would've probably skipped over it because of the SciFi logo. Again, not wanting to sound a snob, but when I think of the SciFi channel anymore I think of extreme championship wrestling and C list horror movies :(

It's okay. As long as you bought the book. ;)
