Release Date!
Yes, that long-awaited day is here, the most important day in the career of a budding novelist: the release date of his or her first novel. Ah, yes, from the moment the novelist awakens, it is roses and strawberries, kudos and laud. Let's peek inside the world of a budding novelist, and share this most wonderful of days:

8:00 am - Write ten words on next opus - can't disappoint readers
8:05 am - Trans-Atlantic interview with British fans - bloody good time
8:30 am - Bath of scented water
9:00 am - Limo arrives for start of book tour
9:05 am - Body guards escort novelist to limo; one fan bloodied
9:30 am - Arrive first book store
9:35 am - Use mechanical book signing machine to sign ten books at a time
9:45 am - Mobbed by crowd of fans
10:00 am - Stop at the retirement home of ex-English teacher
10:05 am - Note that you can to split infinitives to Mrs. Graves, see page 124
10:30 am - Arrive second book store
10:35 am - Sign body part of adoring fan
10:36 am - Erase and sign again
10:37 am - Erase and sign again
11:00 am - Radio interview with Howard Stern
11:30 am - Lunch with Nobel Literature Prize committee
12:30 pm - Write ten more words on next opus
12:35 pm - Call agent, demanding Mongolian Rights be negotiated immediately
1:00 pm - Take Hollywood's call
...

That's right! Singularity's Ring is out today, and that is exactly how my day is going. :)

Also released today is fellow sfnovelist Stephen Leigh's new book A Magic of Twilight. I'm sure his day is going just like I described above.

Wow. Only five hours to get to the Mongolian deal? That took me a full day and a half. Clearly you are a rising superstar, and I am honored to bask in your pixels. Congrats on the release!

ETA: Hey, doesn't Paul Melo have a book coming out today as well? You guys should do some joint booksignings or something.

I keep hearing about this Melo guy. He's beginning to drive me crazy.

People saw him all over the place at Confusion.

This is funny, Paul. I'll have to post an ordinary day for a high school teacher for you. We don't get the limos, but there are a lot of similarities after that.

People want to be rock stars, rock stars want to be actors, but actors want to be writers.

Hey! Congratulations to you!

You too can have the glamorous life of an author. My next book is entitled, "Rock Star Writers: Everyone wants to be a Rock Star, but the Rock Stars all want to be Writers."

Congratulations, friend.

Note that you can to split infinitives to Mrs. Graves, see page 124

How does Mrs. Graves feel about the confusion of homophones?

What are your plans after 1? Or will Hollywood negotiations take the rest of the day?

After 1pm, I finished my day off with changing some diapers and cleaning up some spit-up.

Congrats on the release, Paul!

My day has been much more mundane.

7:00 - awakened to thunderstorm outside
7:10 - dog cowering in bed afraid of lightning
7:20 - cats coming onto bed despite dog to complain about lack of food
7:30 - dragged self into office. Been there ever since.

Exciting, eh? I like your day MUCH better!

Funny, I thought the typical writer's day was more like...

6:49 Awakened by cats playing "kill the boggan" with the toes.

6:51 Son screeches at daughter as she gets to the upstairs bathroom first.

6:52 Learn why son was screeching so loudly, and that the downstairs toilet is clogged again.

7:09 Daughter proudly announces she missed her period again. Disregards the information she's 12 and her cycle hasn't settled down yet.

7:15 Dogs and cats win yet another game of, "Let Me Have What You're Eating".

7:20 Daughter informed---yet again, no to miniskirt, yes to panties.

7:21 son informed---yet again, no to piercings, yes to wearing his pants properly.

7:30 Start up computer, stare at screen, sigh heavily and start typing randomly. Somethings gotta be useful.

7:30:03 Cats start up new game of "Kill the Boggans" with toes. Dogs have to go out.

9:45 School nurse phones in with report that child is bleeding unusually heavily. Go through three panic attacks, two freak outs, and a major tizzy before learning she was talking about son.

9:46 Realize---yet again, that nobody in their right mind would accept today's events as realistic in a work of fiction.

Will the story be made available as an eBook? Open(zero-DRM) format? Something I can stuff into my PDA without having to pwn it?

I have not heard of Tor putting out an eBook for this novel. I'll ask my editor when I see him this weekend at Boskone.
